Ways to get rid of acne in New York City: Start by understanding your skin’s needs
Not all types of acne “spots” are the same. Board-certified skin specialist, Dr. Stephen L. Comite, customizes treatment to your needs. In turn, many patients have benefited from his effective ways to get rid of acne in New York City.
A note on our approach to acne care
We at SkinProvement Dermatology New York have seen time and again how patients can truly live again once the physical and emotional pain of acne is gone. Patients who barely left their homes are now dating, attending college, and otherwise leading active, meaningful and fulfilling lives. At least one of our patients, after exhausting tens of thousands of dollars on OTC treatments, told us that we had saved her life. Professional acne treatments that really treat and prevent outbreaks and scarring are true life-changers.
First, Dr. Comite confirms that your bumps and inflammation are actually acne and not another “imposter”. For instance, conditions such as rosacea and folliculitis may not only resemble acne but feel like it. Once confirmed, acne is graded on a scale of “one” to “four,” with “four” representing a severe outbreak.
Grade One – Mild inflammatory acne, such as whiteheads and blackheads
Grade Two – Mild acne with inflamed, hard and rough papules or fluid-filled, blister-like pustules
Grade Three – Moderate acne, such as papules, pustules, and scattered firm blocked pores (nodules)
Grade Four – Severe acne characterized as highly inflamed papules, pustules, and nodules
Cysts – Similar to nodules, only they present as soft and pus-filled lumps
For more mild cases of acne, topical retinoids and antibiotics are appropriate. Systemic or oral prescription medications, including birth control pills, may be recommended for more moderate cases of acne. Hormonal therapy can be helpful for those patients with stubborn acne or frequent outbreaks. Deeper, painful nodules and cysts may be injected safely by Dr. Comite with corticosteroids. This approach helps to manage pain and the size of the inflamed area. We’ve also seen firsthand how isotretinoin (brand name: Accutane®) has dramatically improved the lives of patients with severe acne.
Acne can be challenging to treat. So, no single type of product, medication, or therapy may be the “silver bullet.” We appreciate that this is a journey, and are sensitive to the trauma this condition can create. We are privileged to work with you to pinpoint an acne spot treatment plan that prevents and manages the severity and frequency of outbreaks.
