Staph Aureus Infections New York

Decolonization after Recurrent Staphylococcus aureus or MRSA Infections or rashes

If you have recurrent Staphylococcus aureus infections, whether it’s MRSA or regular Staphylococcus (MSSA), there is no perfect method to eliminate your risk. However, there are steps you can take that may help lessen your risk of recurrence. These preventive measures are highly suggested by our Board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Stephen Comite, of SkinProvement Dermatology New York in New York, New York.

Please consider the below solutions to reduce the potential risk of MRSA decolonization following recurrent staphylococcus aureus infection or MRSA infections and rashes:

  1. Rinse the body with 4% chlorhexidine (such as Hibiclens) during daily bathing or showering. You can also consider dilute bleach baths (see our website for details). If time does not permit this bathing, you can try CLN wash.
  2. Use 0.12% chlorhexidine mouthwash twice daily.
  3. Use prescription 2% mupirocin twice daily into your nostrils

Do #s 1, 2, and 3 for five days, twice monthly for six months.

  • Wash your hands immediately every time they touch your wound/rash or anything that has had contact with your wound with soap and water or an alcohol-based sanitizer.
  • Avoid sharing any items that may be contaminated, such as towels, clothing, bar soap, bedding, razors, and athletic equipment.
  • Clothing that comes into contact with wound drainage or rash should be laundered, preferably on a hot cycle, and dried thoroughly.
  • Environmental surfaces, with which you and multiple individuals have bare skin contact with, should be cleaned with an OTC cleanser with active ingredients against Staph aureus. Cross-transmission of Staph aureus between humans and pets have been described.
  • Consider having family members or roommates tested with a bacterial culture. They will need to set up an appointment at our office.
  • Consider having family or roommates do numbers 1, 2, and 3 and follow the rest of the guidelines, especially if Staph aureus is found upon them via culture.
